December 1, 2019 was the deadline for having all construction workers and site safety managers to have completed their required site safety training (at least 30 to 62 hours depending on the site and the role of the individual. For more on site safety requirements see https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/safety/sst-safety.page).
In anticipation of this deadline, 6000 major construction sites were or are intended to be visited by the DOB Construction Inspectors to emphasize the importance of Life Safety by enforcing proper site safety with stiff penalties to help “prevent needless tragedies”, referred to as the “Site Safety Sweep”.
This sweep will be aggressive and will not conclude until all intended sites are visited. Specifically mentioned in the reference article are:
- Scaffold safety
- Crane operations
- Fall protection systems
“Sites can be fined up to $25,000 for each construction safety violation. Sites can also be shut down in the event of serious safety lapses.”
The NYC Department of Buildings now publishes monthly bulletins of the most serious site safety violators as well, increasing public aware ness of these offenders. (https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/about/enforcement-action-bulletin.page)
