Starting June 1, 2018, those who are using crane or derrick equipment must make use of the online Crane/Derrick notification form to conform to the DOB’s crane notification rule. Here are some of the things that you need to consider:
When cranes or derricks require on-site inspection certificates or on-site waivers, or, when supervised by a Licensed Master Rigger, the DOB must be notified when:
- The crane or derrick arrives on site.
- The crane is assembled or disassembled (except tower cranes), and
- A concrete foundation for a tower crane is poured.
Cancellation and Rescheduling
If the operation of a crane and/or derrick needs to be canceled and rescheduled, the DOB needs to be notified no later than the date the activity was scheduled. The DOB also needs to be notified at least one day, but not more than two days, before the activity is rescheduled.
Equipment Removal
After the crane or derrick has been removed from the construction site, the DOB needs to be notified not more than two days after this removal. This is not required for cranes that worked on-site under a 48-hour on-site waiver.

In case the original CD is replaced, confirm in the Buildings Information System (BIS) that the replacement CD is active, and email the replacement CD to CNotifications@buildings.nyc.gov before starting your operations. You will also need to provide a copy of this email on-site in case a DOB inspector requires it.
Failure to notify the DOB of crane & derrick operations may result in hefty penalties. If you have any inquires, you can email the DOB directly at CNotifications@buildings.nyc.gov.
