New Art Commission Approval Requirement:
To protect the integrity of City-owned buildings, the required item for Art Commission approval now automatically applies to all applications for proposed work affecting building exteriors on City-owned properties that are not landmarked. Landmarked properties remain under the jurisdiction of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The Art Commission review was implemented since 2005 but can now be enforced as the City gains the ability to link it's agencies computer networks.
Effective September 10, 2008, Art Commission approval is required before your application can be approved and again before it is signed off. A Prior to Approval and Prior to Sign-off Required Item will automatically be applied to all applications on City-Owned properties that are not Landmarked for Art Commission approval. This change helps to ensure that the existing requirements for proposed work affecting the building exterior receive the proper Art Commission approvals.
Work exempt from this requirement includes:
-
Exterior Walls,
-
Fences,
-
Gates,
-
Steps,
-
Distinctive paving,
-
Benches,
-
Lamps posts,
-
Signage,
-
Trafic signals or other similar structures on City-owned property.
The Prior to Approval requirement must be satisfied with the appropriate drawings perforated by the Art Commission. The Prior to Sign-off requirement must be satisfied with the appropriate color photographs perforated by the Art Commission. Developers and registered professionals must incorporate the Art Commission review in their planning process to avoid significant delays.
The Art Commission was renamed the Design Commission in July 2008 to better reflect its mission. The Design Commission reviews permanent works of art, architecture and landscape architecture proposed on or over City-owned property.
