Zoning Corner: June 2003 - Proposed Gansevoort Market Historic District
by Jim Brockman

This month we bring you the latest news about NYC Landmarks proposed Gansevoort Market Historic District.

June 2003

Gansevoort Market

The Gansevoort Market area is located on the West Side, just north of Greenwich Village, generally between Horatio and 15th Street. The area is rich in history, most predominantly being the primary location of the NYC meat packing and meat markets for the past 100 years.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has recently held hearings related to the Gansevoort Market area. A proposed district map has been issued and is currently under review. < view proposed map in PDF format >

So far, support of the preservation of these buildings has been strong, and it appears the Landmarks designation will go through. Some resistance has been heard from property owners in the area, who are concerned about restrictions on development.
