New Sidewalk Shed Maintenance Requirements

New Sidewalk Shed Maintenance Requirements:

To ensure that sidewalk sheds are maintained safely over the course of a job, the Department is now requiring building owners or contractors to be responsible for their upkeep. The sidewalk shed company hired by the building owner will still obtain the permits to install the shed, but now the owner or contractor must be listed on the PW2 as the applicant of record.

Effective November 3, 2008, the Applicant of Record listed on the PW2 will be responsible for maintaining sidewalk sheds. The shed company hired by the building owner will continue to be responsible for pulling initial permits associated with the installation of the sidewalk shed; however it will be the Applicant of Record who is responsible for the ongoing upkeep.

Effective November 3, 2008 those seeking to install a sidewalk shed must:

  • Complete and sign the PW2 form;
  • Maintain the sidewalk shed during the period the permit is valid;
  • File a new PW2 form if the Applicant of Record changes during the period the permit is valid;
  • Detail inspections in an on-site maintenance log. A sample maintenance log is available on DOB website at www.nyc.gov/buildings;
  • contact the shed company regarding any damage to a sidewalk shed;
  • cordon off any dangerous areas that may impact the public or workers.
Once the job is approved, the individual identified on the PW2 form accepts responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of the shed.
