Most constructions projects require a permit to do the work, regardless if it's enlarging, repairing, altering, demolishing, adding or removing certain structures or even changing the use or occupancy of a building, you need permit to do so or else, you will be cited for violation and most probably fined and even taken to court depending on the severity of the violation.
Classification of Work Permits
Work permits are classified as follows:
1. New Building Permit. For new building constructions subject to the provisions in section 28-101.4.5 of this code.
2. Alteration Permit. For alteration of buildings or structures, both for new and existing sign structures, partial demolitions in conjunction with such buildings/structures.
3. Foundation and Earthwork permit. For the construction or alteration of foundations including earthwork, excavation, filling and insulation of foundation.
4. Earthwork permit. For work that involves earthwork like excavation or filling operations.
5. Full Demolition Permit. For the full demolition or removal of the building/structure
6. Plumbing Permit. Needed for the installation or alteration of plumbing and plumbing systems
7. Sign Permit. For the installation, erection or alteration of signs.
8. Service Equipment Permit. For installation or alteration of service equipment like air conditioning and ventilation, boilers, elevators, walkways and the likes.
9. Temporary construction equipment permit. For the installation of temporary structures necessary for construction and safety during construction. This includes temporary fences, scaffolds, railings, catch platforms and the likes.
10. Fire Protection and Suppression System permit. For the installation and alteration of fire protection and suppression systems including but not limited to standpipe systems, sprinkler systems, non-water systems, as well as fire suppression systems for commercial cooking equipment.
11. Crane and Derrick permit. for utilizing power operated canes and derricks during construction.
These are just a few of the permits that must be acquired from the DOB itself, separate permits are also required for each work to be done, other permits may also be necessary and from other agencies as well before you can begin construction. You need to make sure you have everything in order or else, you might get cited for violations and fined when an inspector comes and you have incomplete permits.
