Each part of a building is individually classified according to the provisions set in section 302.1 of this code. Should a building contain more than 1 occupancy group, the building or a portion of it shall comply with all applicable provisions of sections 508.2, 508.3, 508.4 r a combination of these sections,with the following exceptions:
a. Occupancies separated according to section 510.
b. Areas of Group H-1, H-2 and H-3 occupancies will be located in a detached building/structure, where required by Table 415.5.2.
c. Rooms and spaces as identified by table 509 of Chapter 5 of this code will be considered as incidental use.
d. Mechanical and electrical rooms (if not identified on Table 509) will use the occupancy within which they are located at the discretion of the applicant, classed as Group F-2 in accordance with Section 306.3.
Accessory Occupancy
These occupancies are ancillary to the main occupancy and shall comply with the set provisions of sections 508.2.1 through 508.2.4. The accessory occupancy shall not occupy more than 10% of the total area of the building and cannot exceed the values set forth in BC table 503. It shall also meet the most restrictive applicable provision of BC 503 and BC 9 as well as other code requirements based on the occupancy of the accessory space.
Nonseparated Occupancy
Nonseparated occupancies shall be individually classified following the provisions in section 302.1 and the requirements of this code applies to each part of the building based on the occupancy classification of the said space. It's allowable height and area will be based on the most restrictive allowance provided for the occupancy group or construction classification.
Separated Occupancy
This occupancy shall be classified as Individual occupancy and shall be separated from adjacent occupancies as noted in table 508.4. Each occupancy must also comply with height limits based on it's construction classification and each fire area is subject to the requirement for the occupancy of such fire area.
Incidental Use
Incidental uses are ancillary functions associated with a given occupancy that poses a greater risk than the main occupancy but is still classified under the main occupancy. Incidental uses are listed in BC Table 509. The space also cannot be more than 10% of the building in which they are located. The space is also subject to separation and protection as noted in Table 509.
